Beetroot Seeds
Beetroot, Beta vulgaris, evolved from the wild sea beet, found along coastlines from Britain to India. Its botanical name 'Beta' comes from the Celtic 'bett', meaning 'red'. Beetroot is really a biennial but is grown as an annual, both for its bulbous roots and leaves. It does best in well-drained, fertile soils.
Beetroot is a versatile and very flavoursome root vegetable seed that lends itself to many different dishes. The diverse array of cultivars we have at D.T. Brown comes in vibrant colours such as red, purple, yellow, and white. Browse our beetroot seeds below, add some colour to your recipes, and taste the benefits of homegrown vegetables.
Growing Beetroot from Seed
Beetroot seeds are very easy to grow and pose no major problems when growing. Seeds should be sown between early spring to the middle of summer. They should be grown in a sunny spot, with free-draining soil which is high in nitrogen. Otherwise, fertiliser with high nitrogen content should be used.
They are especially resistant plants, typically free of problems from diseases or pests. The main thing to keep in mind is to keep them well watered to avoid wilting and cracked roots. However, overwatering should be avoided, as this can result in leafy growth in place of root growth.
They can be harvested from early summer to the middle of autumn. Once harvested, they can be prepared in a variety of ways, including pickling, steaming, or roasting to enhance their sweetness.
