Growing Allium Bulbs
Your allium bulbs should be planted between early and mid-autumn. Plant them in a sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil. Be sure not to plant them in waterlogged or frozen soil, as their growth will be impacted.
Plant your allium bulbs at a depth of around four times the height of the bulb, at least 15cm (6in) deep. Depending on the height of your allium bulbs, you should plant them around 8cm (3in) apart for smaller varieties and around 20cm (8in) for taller varieties.
Looking after allium bulbs is simple once they are established. As these bulbs are drought-tolerant, watering them is not generally necessary and could even cause rotting. Feeding them is also not usually needed, though they will benefit from garden fertiliser added in spring for poor soil conditions.
Once the warm weather arrives, your alliums will flower from late May into early summer. They produce flowers year after year, up to four years after planting. They can be left over winter, as they are hardy, don’t need to be deadheaded and their dried flower heads look attractive.
