Tomato San Marzano is a classic Italian plum tomato prized for its firm, meaty flesh, rich flavour and relatively low seed content. It is a superb choice for turning a home-grown harvest into passata, pasta sauces and slow-roasted dishes, while the ripe fruits are equally enjoyable fresh. Grow under glass or in a warm, sunny, sheltered position outdoors and provide support as the plants develop.

Sow indoors January-March for greenhouse crops or March-April for outdoor crops, 0.5cm deep at 15-20°C. Transplant seedlings individually at the 2-4 leaf stage. Plant into large pots, growing bags or the greenhouse border from late April-May, or outdoors after frost in a sunny, sheltered position. Provide support, water regularly and feed with a liquid tomato fertiliser once the first truss has set. Harvest July-October, with outdoor crops generally ripening later.
