There are so many wonderful varieties of squash seeds to choose from, including acorn squash, winter squash, summer squash and the intriguing spaghetti squash, which makes a fantastic low-carb pasta substitute. Butternut squash seeds are a particular favourite, producing fruits with a remarkably sweet and almost nutty flavour. The plants are highly productive – we love harvesting masses of fruits from our own trial ground. 

Squash seeds can be started inside from March to May, or sown directly outdoors from May. Early sowings will benefit from cloche protection. Some grow on large vines, while others (like Butterbush F1) have a more compact bushy growth habit, making them perfect for smaller gardens. 

Keep your squash plants well-watered and weed-free, and use a good quality plant feed throughout the season, as they thrive in rich soil. Many varieties (especially winter squashes) will keep for months after harvesting, making them a most useful winter vegetable in the kitchen.
