Melon seeds need plenty of warmth to be successful, so they should generally be sown indoors in greenhouses between March and April. However, growing them under cold frames, garden cloches, or in a warm, sheltered garden area between April and May is also possible if they’re attentively cared for.
We recommend sowing your seeds indoors in a greenhouse with the help of a garden propagator. Keep your seeds at 18°C, sowing two seeds per seed tray module. Keep them well watered and exposed to a good amount of light. Then, thin out to the strongest seedling.
Once your plants have three or four leaves, plant them in their final position, indoors or outdoors. Melons are climbing plants, meaning they will need vertical support, such as a cane, to grow up, or they will need the space to sprawl. Once established, they will also need regular watering and feeding with a high-potash garden fertiliser. Hand-pollinate flowers for the best fruit, and pinch out growing tips after four to five fruits form to focus energy on fruit growth.
