How to Grow Californian Poppies

Californian poppy seeds do best when grown in a full sun spot. Though, they aren’t fussy as they do well when grown in a range of soil types, even thriving in low-nutrient soils without the help of fertiliser. They also don’t need watering very often, so should be watered only on occasion. They are generally disease- and pest-free, meaning that you should experience reliable growth from them without many issues.

These seeds can be sown in spring or autumn. If sowing in spring, they should be done so after the risk of frost has passed. If sowing in autumn, they can establish before winter for earlier blooms in the following spring. They don’t do well when their roots have been disturbed, so it’s often best to plant Californian poppies in their final position directly. Once sown, they are fast-growing and should mature between 55 to 90 days.

When matured, they are very prominent plants within a garden. Their flowers grow to about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in diameter, and the plant grows to around 30-60 cm (12-24 inches).
