When to Plant Hollyhock Seeds

Sow Hollyhock seeds indoors from March to May, and plant outside from May to July. Hollyhocks are biennials, producing foliage in the first year and bloom in the second. If started indoors, sow hollyhock seeds in seed trays with fine compost and only transplant them when they grow large enough to handle. 

How to Grow Hollyhock Seeds

Sow Hollyhock seeds thinly on the surface of moist, well-drained compost and cover lightly. Keep the soil damp but not waterlogged. Once seedlings appear, transplant them into individual pots or directly into garden borders. Choose a sunny, sheltered location with fertile soil. Space plants at least 45cm (18in) apart to allow for strong growth. These tall flower seeds can grow over 2m (80in) tall, so provide support in exposed areas. Water regularly during dry spells and remove faded flowers to prolong blooming. Cut back spent stems in autumn and leave basal foliage to encourage regrowth the following year.
