When to Plant Fruit Seeds

There are many varieties of fruit seeds, each with their perfect sowing window. Most should be sown indoors in late winter or early spring, when there’s still time for germination and strong early growth before the last frost. Strawberries, for example, are best sown from January to March, while melons can generally be sown from February to April (though some cultivars, such as Melon Emir F1, can be started as late as May). Your fruit seeds will arrive with a complete sowing and growing guide, so check the packet for variety-specific instructions.

How to Grow Fruit Seeds

Sow fruit seeds in clean trays with fine seed compost. Many varieties, such as melons, need warmth and light to sprout, so start seeds in a sunny spot indoors or use a heated propagator for surest results. Water your seedlings regularly and keep the compost moist as they grow. Once your young fruit plants have developed true leaves and a strong root system, transplant them into larger pots. Harden them off gradually before planting out when the weather warms.
