Polestar produces masses of smooth, dark green pods that are virtually stringless when picked young. Their fine flavour and tender texture make them delicious steamed, boiled or added to seasonal dishes. SOW INDOORS April-May, singly in pots of compost, 2.5cm/1in deep. Harden off from late May and transplant into the final growing position in June. SOW OUTDOORS May-July, directly into the final position, 5cm/2in deep and approximately 20cm/8in apart. Provide sturdy bean frames, canes or netting and train the young growth onto the supports. Keep well watered, particularly when flowering, and harvest regularly to encourage continuous cropping. Suitable for freezing.
