Enjoy one of the finest-flavoured acorn squashes with this productive heirloom introduced in the 1950s. Gill's Golden Pippin produces attractive, individual-sized fruits with golden-orange skin and dense, pale-orange flesh. Its rich, slightly savoury flavour makes it exceptionally versatile for roasting, stuffing, soups and other autumn dishes. The uniquely coloured fruits also look wonderful in seasonal displays.

SOW INDOORS March-May, one seed per small pot, 2.5cm/1in deep. Keep at 18-21°C/65-70°F. Harden off and plant outside after the risk of frost has passed, spacing plants approximately 90cm/3ft apart. SOW OUTDOORS May-June, directly into prepared soil, 2.5cm/1in deep. Sow two seeds at each position and remove the weaker seedling after germination. Keep plants well watered and feed regularly once fruits begin to form. Harvest when the skin is firm and fully coloured, before the first frost.
