Yellow Moon This golden-skinned shallot is the perfect companion to Picasso. It gives a heavy crop of high quality, healthy bulbs whether planted in spring or autumn. The plants are not prone to bolting and the harvested bulbs store very well. Flavour and texture are both excellent.
Bistro Perfect raw in salads, pickled or added to a host of casseroles or other hot dishes, Bistro gives an excellent crop of fairly mild, rich golden bulbs. It can be planted from February onwards.

Sweeter and milder than onions, shallots have twice the amount of vitamin C and are also rich in vitamins A, B and E. They are invaluable in sauces, dressings, and salads, and notice how often TV chefs use them. This variety is really special and give great results when planted in the spring. All of our bulbs are certified as disease and virus free.

We supply individual, mature bulbs which, when re-planted, grow on to form clusters of up to 7 shallots usually ready to harvest in July. A 500g pack contains between 15 and 30 bulbs depending upon variety.

When should you plant shallot bulbs?

Depending on the variety, you can plant shallot bulbs in autumn or spring. Yellow Moon and Bistro are two varieties of spring planting shallots. It is best to plant in February or March when the ground is workable, and it’s not too wet. Shallots are remarkably resilient plants.

How to plant shallots from bulbs?

Planting shallot bulbs in spring is easy. Plant your shallots in rows around 3 to 5cm deep with about 15 to 20cm between each bulb. The rows should be around 30cm apart. Backfill so that the tops of the shallots are just visible, and water them in well. Make sure that the pointy end of the bulb is pointing upwards.

What should not be planted near shallots?

Planting asparagus seeds, bean plants, or peas may not be a good idea next to your shallots. Shallots are thought to stunt the growth of these particular plants. Similarly, they compete for the same nutrients as potatoes, so it's best not to plant them near your potatoes either.
