Winter hardy with vigorous and highly branched roots that help break down compacted soil, phacelia produces dense foliage and attractive flowers - a magnet for bumble bees and beneficial insects. As it decomposes valuable minerals are released, including phosphorus, calcium and magnesium as well as high levels of nitrogen. Planted in the autumn it can also help to reduce nitrate leaching.
The incorporation of green plant tissue into the soil is an ancient practice known as ‘green manuring’. Green Manures are used to disrupt pest and disease life cycles, improve soil fertility and nutrient levels and suppress weeds.
