Growing Red Cabbage

Red cabbage is enjoyed as an interesting alternative to standard cabbage. They generally have a more peppery, earthy flavour, while several varieties have distinctive, sweet flavours.

Similarly to other Brassica seeds, red cabbage thrives in cooler temperatures, so it is best sown in spring or autumn. They grow best when planted in soil that’s well-drained and fertile. Seeds should be spaced around 12 to 18 inches apart for full head development. They will generally mature between 70 and 90 days, maturing slightly slower than green cabbage.

They can be affected by several pests, such as cabbage root fly and cabbage whitefly, so you should ensure that you protect them with pest and disease control products if this poses a problem. You should also keep them free of moisture and weeds for optimal growth.
