Growing Tomatoes at Home

Cultivated in Central America as early as 500 BC, the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) has been grown in Britain for over 400 years. This popular ingredient is a fruit in the botanical sense but is primarily used as a vegetable.

While you can start them from seeds, buying tomato plants saves both time and effort. You can plant them outdoors straight away, rather than waiting several weeks for them to germinate and grow. Established plants are also less susceptible to common early-stage problems like damping off and stunted growth.
