Growing Florence Fennel Seeds

Fennel can be slightly tricky to grow but is well worth it for its distinct flavour. Being a herb plant that takes up little space, it’s the ideal choice for growing in smaller gardens and containers. As fennel dislikes its roots being disturbed, it's best either sown directly outdoors or started indoors in seed trays with one seed per module. 

Growing fennel indoors should be done in late spring, as it doesn’t grow well in cold temperatures. From late May, it should be gradually hardened off to acclimatise your plants to outdoor conditions, then planted outdoors. Alternatively, fennel seeds can be sown outdoors between June and July. 

Outdoors, fennel enjoys growing in warm and moist conditions in well-drained fertile soil. Ensure that well-rotted manure or garden compost is added to the soil, that your plants are well watered to avoid bolting, and that plants are fed with a high-potassium garden fertiliser every two weeks. Harvest when the bulbs start to swell, usually from summer through autumn.
