Best described as a sweeter version of Feltham First, this French variety is not as high yielding, although it may be sown in autumn or spring and needs virtually no support. An old variety, but well worth growing today. (Round seeded) Height: 45cm/18in
Sowing broad beans and peas in the autumn is the only way to guarantee an early spring harvest at a time of year when there is little else cropping. Not only can you enjoy the unbeatable taste of freshly picked beans and peas as early as May, but the plants are often advanced enough to avoid the worst of the spring pests such as black fly and pea and bean weevil. The young plants will need protection from slugs and may need covering with fleece over winter in cold or exposed areas.
“Over the years I‘ve found Broad Bean Superaguadulce and Pea Douce Provence to be the hardiest and most reliable of the autumn planting varieties. They have an excellent flavour too”. Tim Jeffries
Sow Outdoor from October to November or January-March, in flattrenches 6in/15cm wide. A sheltered spot and some protection is advisable if sowing in autumn. Depth 2in/5cm to 3in/7.5cm apart over the length and width of the trench. Fill in and firm down lightly. Protect from birds during early stages of growth. Trenches 3ft/90cm apart. Support: using canes or twigs. Harvest May onwards. For the best flavour pick peas just before they are needed. Harvest regularly. Suitable for freezing.
