It’s important to plant flower bulbs and tubers right for strong, healthy growth. Spring-flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodil bulbs, and crocuses should be planted in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes. Summer-flowering bulbs and tubers such as dahlias and begonia bulbs are best planted in spring after the last frost. If starting indoors, plant tubers in pots from February onwards to give them a head start. Always check individual varieties for specific planting times, as some flowers, like lily bulbs, can be planted in both autumn and spring for staggered flowering.

Your flower tubers and bulbs should be planted in well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Position them at the correct depth – typically two to three times the bulb’s height. Space them apart to allow air circulation and prevent disease. Most bulbs prefer full sun, but some, like anemones, tolerate partial shade. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. For tubers like dahlias, plant them shallowly and provide support as they grow. Feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser for best results.
