Snakeshead Fritillary Bulb Collection brings together two beautiful forms of the much-loved snakeshead fritillary, combining the distinctive purple chequered blooms of Fritillaria meleagris with the rarer white-flowered Fritillaria meleagris Alba. Supplied as 30 bulbs, with 15 of each variety, this collection creates a charming naturalistic display in borders, containers or when allowed to naturalise through grass.
Flowering throughout April and May, the elegant, nodding bell-shaped blooms are held on upright stems reaching approximately 15–20cm (8–10in). The classic purple flowers contrast beautifully with the softly chequered white blooms of Alba, creating a delicate spring display that also makes an excellent addition to cut flower arrangements.
Plant in autumn in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade, where these hardy perennials will establish well and gradually naturalise over time if left undisturbed. Generally trouble-free and easy to grow, they are ideal for woodland-style planting, the front of borders and informal garden settings. As with other Fritillaria, keep an eye out for Lily Beetle, which can occasionally affect plants.
Fritillaria
Fritillaria is a diverse genus of spring-flowering bulbs, admired for its elegant, nodding bell-shaped flowers. Most varieties thrive in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, while selections such as meleagris and michailovskyi will gradually naturalise when left undisturbed, returning year after year with increasing impact.
