Runner Bean Armstrong is a vigorous, reliable variety producing heavy crops of long, succulent stringless beans with excellent flavour. Its good disease resistance helps keep plants productive through summer, while regular picking encourages even more pods. Steam or lightly boil the young beans for the freshest flavour, or freeze surplus harvests to enjoy later in the year.

Sow indoors April-May, one or two seeds per pot, and keep at around 15°C. Harden off outdoors from May and transplant after the risk of frost. Alternatively sow outdoors May-early July, around 5cm deep and 12cm apart. Provide sturdy poles, bean frames or netting for support. Keep plants well watered, particularly while flowering and pods are forming, and pick beans regularly from July-October to encourage continued cropping.
