A fine, all-round variety, but particularly good as an early salad variety. We love the oval, red skinned tubers with their delicious, moist, yellow flesh. Potatoes are one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow. There's the nurturing process of chitting, planting and earthing-up, the anticipation of a good harvest as you dig through the soil and, of course, the unbeatable taste of fresh, home-grown, potatoes. All potatoes (except for maincrops) will benefit from chitting prior to planting out. The chitting process encourages the seed to sprout, which then when planted, helps them to establish more readily, leading to bigger crops. Simply place them, blunt end up, in an old egg box until the shoots are approximately 1 to ½cm (½ to 1in). Potatoes are delivered in 1kg bags, each pack containing approx. 8-14 tubers.

FAQs

Learn more about Red Duke of York Seed Potatoes (First Early).

When is the best time to plant red Duke of York potatoes?

The best time to plant red Duke of York potatoes is from mid-March to mid-April, when the soil temperature is consistently above 8°C, and the risk of frost has passed. It is recommended to choose a dry day free from frost for planting, and the seed potatoes benefit from chitting beforehand to encourage sprouting.

How long do red Duke of York potatoes take to grow?

Red Duke of York potatoes typically take about 10 to 12 weeks from planting to harvest as a first early variety. They are known for their fast growth and early cropping, making them ready for harvesting around late June to early July if planted in mid-March to mid-April.

How long can the red Duke of York potato be stored and how to store them?

Red Duke of York potatoes can be stored for several months if kept properly. For storage, harvest your potatoes fully, allow them to dry for a few hours, and then store them in a cool, dry, dark place with good ventilation. It is best to keep them in hessian or paper sacks instead of plastic bags to prevent moisture buildup and rotting.
