A real aristocrat of the potato world, this gives high yields of smooth skinned, waxy tubers with a firm, yellow flesh. The flavour is first rate and plants have good resistance to disease. Strongly recommended. Potatoes are one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow. There's the nurturing process of chitting, planting and earthing-up, the anticipation of a good harvest as you dig through the soil and, of course, the unbeatable taste of fresh, home-grown, potatoes. All potatoes (except for maincrops) will benefit from chitting prior to planting out. The chitting process encourages the seed to sprout, which then when planted, helps them to establish more readily, leading to bigger crops. Simply place them, blunt end up, in an old egg box until the shoots are approximately 1 to ½cm (½ to 1in). Potatoes are delivered in 1kg bags, each pack containing approx. 8-14 tubers.

FAQs

Want to know more about our Lady Christl potatoes? We answer your questions here.

When to plant Lady Christl potatoes?

Plant Lady Christl potatoes in early spring, from late March to early April, once the soil feels workable and frost risk is gone. Start chitting your seed potatoes on a windowsill 4–6 weeks before (late January onwards), letting short green shoots form. Plant them into well-drained, sunny soil or pots about 10cm deep and 30cm apart, then keep the soil moist but not soggy.

How long do Lady Christl potatoes take to grow?

Lady Christl potatoes are a fast-maturing extra early variety and typically take 11–12 weeks from planting to harvest for tender new potatoes ready by mid to late July if planted in late March.

What are Lady Christl potatoes good for?

Lady Christl potatoes shine as a waxy early variety, perfect for boiling or steaming straight from the garden. Their smooth, pale yellow skin and creamy flesh hold firm with a delicious buttery, slightly sweet flavour ideal for new potato salads, warm buttered dishes, or minty summer sides. Their firm texture also works well for roasting, light frying into rösti, or gratins.
