Succession sowing every 2-3 weeks from March to September keeps your salad bowl full without gaps. Scatter thinly on moist soil, cover lightly, and thin to 10-15cm apart. This method suits cut-and-come-again mixed lettuce seeds and yields tender baby leaves for 6-8 weeks per batch.
Both! You can snip young at 5-10cm for tender, colourful baby leaves perfect for salads or let mature to 20-30cm for heartier heads. Harvest the outer leaves first for prolonged picking; full plants give bolder flavours in reds and greens. Baby cuts encourage regrowth up to three times, maximising the value of your packet of mixed lettuce seeds.
Sow directly outdoors from March, scattering thinly on raked, weed-free soil; cover with 1cm vermiculite or fine compost. Thin seedlings to 10-15cm to curb mildew and promote strong growth. For containers, use multi-purpose compost in 30cm pots. Water gently, keep moist but not waterlogged. Your mixed lettuce leaves will germinate in 14 days.
