A traditional favourite butterhead (soft hearted) variety. This well established favourite, produces medium-sized, tender heads with great flavour and a lovely melting texture. Extremely hardy, requiring little attention, the plants are slow to bolt and have a long harvesting period, almost al year round under cloches.

Sow outdoors from March to September in well-prepared soil or start earlier indoors on a sunny windowsill for an extended season. For best results, use successional sowings every 2-3 weeks to ensure a constant supply of fresh leaves through spring, summer, and into autumn. Under glass or cloches, you can even grow year-round in cooler UK temperatures.
Choose fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with compost, positioning in full sun or partial shade to prevent bolting in heat. Water consistently to keep the soil damp, especially during dry spells; thin seedlings to 20cm apart for strong growth; and use fleece for frost protection. Harvest outer leaves regularly to encourage new growth and extend the cropping period significantly.
Harvest young outer leaves for a tender texture, or wait until full heads are 15-20cm tall for crunchier salads. Cut just above soil level to allow regrowth. Enjoy fresh within a few days for peak flavour, or store by wrapping loosely in a damp kitchen towel inside the fridge salad drawer to retain crispness for up to a week.
