Whether planting from a potted plant or tuber, timing and soil conditions are key.

• Plant outdoors from late May onwards, once frost risk has passed
• For best results, plant in full sun, in rich, well-drained soil
• Space plants around 45–60cm apart
• Water well after planting and keep the soil moist
• Add organic matter or compost to improve soil fertility

Dahlias thrive in warm soil and should not be planted too early in cold conditions.

To maximise flowering performance:

• Pinch out growing tips when plants are around 20–30cm tall to encourage bushier growth
• Stake taller plants to support heavy blooms
• Feed regularly with a high-potash fertiliser during the growing season
• Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming

These steps will result in more stems and a longer flowering display.

In most parts of the UK, dahlias are not fully frost hardy, so winter care is important.

• After the first frost, cut stems back to around 10–15cm
• Lift tubers carefully and remove excess soil
• Store in a cool, dry, frost-free place (e.g. shed or garage)
• Alternatively, in milder areas, you can mulch heavily and leave it in the ground

Lifting and storing helps protect tubers and ensures strong regrowth the following year.
