Climbing French Bean Violet Podded is as ornamental as it is delicious, producing dramatic dark purple pods against vigorous climbing foliage. Picked young, the beans have an outstanding flavour and tender texture, with the purple pods changing to green when steamed or boiled. Cropping slightly earlier than many runner beans, this productive climber is perfect for adding height to the kitchen garden and attractive enough to grow at the back of a flower border.

Sow indoors April-May, singly in pots of compost around 2.5cm deep. Harden off from late May and transplant outdoors in June after the risk of frost. Alternatively sow outdoors May-June around 5cm deep, spacing plants approximately 20cm apart. Provide tall canes or netting for the vigorous climbing plants. Keep well watered, particularly during flowering and pod development, and harvest regularly while pods are young and tender to encourage continued cropping. Harvest from summer into autumn.
