FAQs

What conditions do hardy chrysanthemum plants need to thrive?

These hardy chrysanthemums perform best in a sunny, open position with well-drained soil. They dislike waterlogged conditions, particularly over winter, so if your soil is heavy or clay-based, it's worth adding grit or organic matter to improve drainage. Plant them in a sheltered spot where possible and deadhead regularly throughout the season to encourage a continuous supply of fresh blooms.

When do hardy chrysanthemums flower and how long do they last?

Hardy chrysanthemums are among the longest flowering plants you can grow in your garden, with some varieties beginning to bloom as early as August and continuing well into October or even November. This makes them invaluable for keeping beds and borders looking colourful as other summer plants begin to fade. Their blooms are also excellent for cutting, lasting well in a vase and bringing a welcome splash of seasonal colour indoors.

Will hardy chrysanthemums come back every year?

Yes, hardy chrysanthemums will overwinter in the ground and return year after year. Once established, they are remarkably resilient and will re-shoot from the base each spring, growing stronger with every season. In particularly cold or exposed gardens, applying a light mulch around the base in late autumn will offer added protection and help ensure they bounce back in spring.
