Blueberry Patriot is a vigorous, very hardy variety producing well-flavoured blue-black berries in mid to late summer. Its reliable fruit makes a useful addition to the kitchen garden, whether picked fresh for breakfasts and desserts or used in baking, preserves and freezing.

Growing to around 2m, Patriot is more tolerant of colder locations and heavier soils than many blueberries, although it still requires acidic conditions. Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained acid soil in full sun or partial shade, or use a raised bed or large container filled with ericaceous compost.

Supplied as an established 2 litre potted plant for a strong start and years of useful harvests.

Grow in acidic, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil (pH 4.5-5.5) in full sun or partial shade. Where garden soil is unsuitable, plant in a large container or raised bed filled with peat-free ericaceous compost. Keep evenly moist, preferably using rainwater, mulch with acidic organic matter and prune established plants in winter.
