Melon Ogen is a much-loved variety producing small, beautifully flavoured fruits with juicy yellow-green flesh and a wonderfully sweet, aromatic taste. Best grown with plenty of warmth in a greenhouse or polytunnel, the plants can produce a rewarding crop of fresh melons for enjoying straight from the garden. Serve chilled on their own, add to summer fruit salads or pair with savoury ingredients for a delicious home-grown treat.

Sow indoors January-March, placing seeds on their edge around 1.5cm deep in pots or trays of seed compost. Maintain approximately 24°C for germination, reducing to around 16°C once seedlings have emerged. Plant into the greenhouse or polytunnel at the 4-5 leaf stage, spacing around 90cm apart and providing support for the developing vines if required. Water and feed regularly during growth and restrict each plant to around 2-3 developing fruits for the best size and flavour. Harvest July-October when fruits are ripe and fragrant.
