Add rich, dramatic colour to summer displays with the distinctive cherry-red flowers of this striking rudbeckia. The bushy, upright plants produce long-stemmed blooms with dark centres, creating an impressive display in beds, borders and large patio containers. Excellent for cutting, the flowers last well in a vase and are also loved by bees, butterflies and hoverflies.

SOW INDOORS February-April, thinly 0.5cm/quarter-in deep in pots or trays of compost. Maintain gentle warmth and transplant at the 2-4 leaf stage. Harden off from late May and plant out from June, spacing plants 30cm/12in apart. SOW OUTDOORS April-May, directly into the flowering position, thinning seedlings as necessary. Keep moist until established and remove faded flowers regularly to prolong flowering.
