SOW OUTDOORS late February-May, thinly in drills, 1.5cm/half-in deep, with 45cm/18in between rows. Germination may be slow, especially in cold or dry soil. Thin seedlings gradually to a final spacing of 23cm/9in apart. Keep rows weed free and water during prolonged dry weather. The roots can remain in the ground until required and often develop a sweeter flavour after exposure to frost.
