Red Baron onion seeds should be sown indoors from January to April, about 8 to 10 weeks before planting outside. Sow seeds 1-1.5 cm deep in trays or pots at 15-30 cm row spacing. Outdoors, you can start to sow seeds in April when the soil warms, in shallow drills 1-1.5 cm deep and rows 30 cm apart. Thin seedlings as they grow to provide space for your bulbs.
To care for Red Baron onions, plant them in a sunny spot with good, well-drained soil. Water them during dry periods, but stop once the bulbs start growing bigger. Keep the area free of weeds and avoid disturbing the roots. Remove any flower stems to help the onions grow better. Feed them with organic fertiliser in spring if needed and protect young plants from birds with netting.
Harvest Red Baron onions when about a third of the leaves are yellow and start to fall over. Pull onions gently from the soil and cure by drying them in a well-ventilated, dry place for 2-3 weeks until skins are papery and tops shrivelled.
Store your cured onion Red Baron in a cool, dry, airy space in mesh bags or crates, as this preserves flavour and extends their shelf life.
