FAQs

When is the best time to sow Bedfordshire onion seeds?

The best time to sow Bedfordshire Champion onion seeds outdoors is March to April. Sow the seeds thinly about 1.5 cm deep in well-prepared, fertile soil. For an earlier start, sow indoors from January to April and transplant later, once the last frost has passed.

How to care for growing Bedfordshire Champion onions?

To grow Bedfordshire Champion onions successfully, plant in a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants about 10-15cm apart to allow bulbs room to develop. Water regularly and soak the soil about 3cm deep weekly, but avoid waterlogging. Keep weeds under control to reduce competition and improve air circulation around plants.

How do you harvest and store your Bedfordshire Champion onions?

To harvest your Bedfordshire Champion onions, wait until the foliage turns yellow and falls over, usually in late summer, around August or September. This indicates the bulbs are mature and are ready to lift.

After harvesting, cure them by laying them out in a warm, dry, and airy spot for about two to three weeks until the outer skins are papery. Once cured, store the onions in a cool, dry, and frost-free place, ready for use.
