Bring the character of a traditional British meadow into your garden with this charming native perennial. Tall, slender stems carry delicate lilac pincushion flowers that look beautiful in borders and cut-flower arrangements. Rich in nectar, the blooms are visited by bees, butterflies, hoverflies and moths, while the plant also provides food for several butterfly and moth caterpillars.

SOW INDOORS February-April, thinly in pots or trays of compost, 0.5cm/quarter-in deep. Transplant into larger pots or trays when necessary. Harden off, then plant out May-June, spacing plants 25cm/10in apart. Remove faded flowers to encourage further blooms, or leave some seed heads in place to provide food for birds.
