Growing fragrant pink climbing flowers on canes and trellises
Vertical displays are a great way to add height and dimension to your garden. Heirloom cultivars like 'Sweet Pea Old Spice' are staples because they deliver classic scents and strong upward growth.
Put up 1.8m-2.4m bamboo cane wigwams or netting supports before planting. Runner roots need cool, moisture-retentive ground, so dig in plenty of compost during autumn or spring soil preparation. Tie fresh shoots in loosely until the tendrils latch onto the twine. Once flowering starts in early summer, harvest stems every two to three days to stop seed pods forming and keep vines producing flowers until late-August.
Sowing pink flower seeds vs planting ready-grown plugs
Deciding whether to raise crops from seed or buy nursery-grown plugs depends on your timing, space, and equipment:
Sowing pink flower seeds:
- Great value — Packets offer an economical way to cover large borders, fill cutting patches, or grow in bulk.
- Heritage variety choice — Choose from classic cottage garden favourites, rare bicolours, and fragrant heirlooms.
- Year-round colour — Stagger your sowings from March to May to provide unbroken colour right through to autumn.
- Hands-on control — Raise sturdy seedlings from scratch using proven sowing techniques and careful pricking out.
Planting ready-grown plug plants:
- Saves weeks of time — Bypasses early indoor germination under glass, arriving well-rooted and ready to pot on.
- No greenhouse required — Ideal if you lack heated propagators, grow lights, or a greenhouse.
- Faster establishment — Plants establish quickly in beds and containers once temperatures sit above 10℃.
- Reduced seedling loss — Sturdy nursery stock bypasses damping-off, tender root disturbance, and early weather checks.
Caring for pink flowering plants through hot summers
Consistent watering and soil nourishment keep buds forming continuously from June to the first autumn frosts. Soak beds deeply at soil level once or twice a week rather than giving light evening sprinkles, which encourage shallow rooting. Check our feeding and watering guide for advice.
Feed your container displays fortnightly with a high-potash liquid feed to encourage heavy flower patches. Delicate new shoots and young seedlings are prime targets for pests in damp spring weather; see our advice on slug control to protect your displays.
