Ornamental gourds are not safe to eat and should only be used for decoration. They often contain a bitter chemical called cucurbitacin that can make you feel sick, causing nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain, even if cooked. Keep them away from children and pets.
Ornamental gourd seeds can be sown in spring once the soil is warm, either in pots indoors or directly outside. Plant your seeds about 2–3 cm deep and well-spaced so the vines have room to spread. They do best in full sun and well‑drained, fertile soil, with regular watering through dry spells to keep growth steady. As the season goes on, let the plants trail over the ground or climb supports, then harvest the gourds in late summer to autumn once the skins are hard and the stems start to dry.
Cut your ornamental gourds with secateurs, leaving a short stem, then cure in a warm, dry spot for 2–4 weeks to toughen them up for your displays. They work well mixed with pumpkins, cones, and foliage in bowls, on mantelpieces or as table centrepieces, and they last longer if kept cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight.
