Growing Pumpkin Seeds

As a winter squash variety, pumpkins are grown similarly to many other types of squash. They are easy to grow, making them a great vegetable plant variety to produce for beginner and experienced gardeners alike. However, they will need plenty of space, with even smaller varieties growing as large as 90cm (3ft).

Pumpkin seeds do well when started indoors in mid-spring. Sow them in peat-free compost with one seed per module in seed trays. Keep them between 18–21°C and water regularly. Then, once developed, harden them off to prepare them for outdoor planting after the last frost. 

You can also sow them outside from late May to early June, keeping them protected with a garden cloche. Once established, ensure they are watered regularly and that the soil is covered with an organic mulch, such as well-rotted manure or garden compost.
