Discover more about our Sweet Basil Herb Seeds.
March is the best month to start sweet basil seeds indoors in the UK, providing an early head start with germination at 20°C in pots or trays on a warm windowsill or propagator.
Sowing can continue through April to July for successive crops and a longer season, avoiding cold snaps by hardening off plants before transplanting outdoors post-frost in May.
Start harvesting sweet basil leaves when plants reach 6-8 inches (15-20cm) tall, about 4-6 weeks after sowing indoors or transplanting. Pinch or snip the top growth tips just above a leaf node to encourage bushier growth, taking up to 1/3 of the plant every 1-2 weeks during summer. We recommend you harvest in the morning for the best flavour.
Sweet basil seeds' benefits include being rich in fibre, omega-3s, antioxidants, iron, calcium, and magnesium, aiding digestion, weight management, heart health, blood sugar control, and hydration. They also offer anti-inflammatory effects, skin benefits, immunity support, and a cooling property ideal for summer drinks. Soak them in water for 10-15 minutes first so they swell and form a gel-like coating, making them easier to digest. Sweet basil seeds also add texture to drinks, smoothies, desserts, yoghurt, or salads.
