Sow Runner Bean Scarlet Empire seeds directly outdoors from late May onwards, once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed. These tender plants thrive in warm conditions, so patience pays off. Sowing too early in cold soil can cause the seeds to rot. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost.
Runner Bean Scarlet Empire pods are ready to pick from July through September when they reach full size and tender maturity. For the best flavour and texture, harvest pods regularly while they are young and tender, as this encourages the plants to continue flowering and producing more beans throughout the season. Pick pods by gently holding the stem and snapping or cutting them away cleanly to avoid damaging the plant.
Runner beans are vigorous climbing plants that require sturdy vertical support to grow successfully. You can use bamboo canes arranged in a wigwam formation, traditional wooden or metal trellises, or bean frames. Supports should be about 2 metres tall to accommodate the plants' climbing habit. As your runner beans grow, gently tie the main stems to the support with soft twine or plant ties to encourage them to climb upward.
