Garlic Kingsland Wight Bulbs (Hardneck) are supplied as 2 bulbs and represent one of the finest recent additions to the garlic range, combining striking appearance with exceptional flavour.
This impressive hardneck variety produces white-skinned bulbs filled with plump pink cloves, reminiscent of the renowned French Rose de Lautrec, long celebrated for its quality. Classed as a Creole type, it is known for both its resilience and its rich, strong and spicy flavour, making it a standout choice for the kitchen.
Creole garlics originate from regions spanning Spain and south-west France, with roots tracing back to Central Asia. They are highly regarded for their depth of flavour and excellent keeping qualities. Best results are achieved from an autumn planting, although early spring planting can also succeed in milder southern areas.
Each year, bulbs are carefully sourced in partnership with The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight, ensuring consistently high-quality, expert-grown stock. Easy to grow and suitable for beds, allotments or containers, all bulbs are certified disease and virus free for reliable results.
Garlic Types
Hardneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon) generally more hardy than softneck varieties (they are the best choice for northern gardeners) and tend to be larger but with fewer cloves per bulb. They produce scapes in early summer – a strong, single flower stalk that should be removed and used in a range of culinary dishes.
Softneck Garlic (Allium sativum var. sativum) often produce smaller cloves per head but are quicker to mature and will store for longer than hardneck varieties. Softneck types prefer warmer conditions and are generally milder in flavour, with soft stems ideal for plaiting.
