Keep harvesting fresh salad leaves through the colder months with this completely hardy cut-and-come-again crop. Also known as miner’s lettuce, Winter Purslane produces tender, slightly succulent green leaves with a mild, refreshing flavour. Sow from summer into autumn for reliable winter harvests, picking a few leaves from each plant so that they continue to regrow. The small white flowers are also edible.

SOW OUTDOORS throughout spring and summer, although July-October sowings are best for winter crops. Sow thinly and directly into the final growing position, 1.5cm/half-in deep in rows 25-30cm/10-12in apart. Thin seedlings to approximately 25cm/10in apart. Keep well watered and weed free. Begin harvesting approximately 6-8 weeks after sowing, taking a few outer leaves from each plant to encourage regrowth.
