Turn home-grown tomatoes into rich sauces, soups and salsas with this productive F1 paste variety. Big Mama produces generous crops of large, plum-shaped red fruits with dense, meaty flesh and relatively few seeds. The thin skins peel away easily after briefly immersing the fruits in boiling water. This vigorous indeterminate cordon variety is ideal for a greenhouse or large, sunny container and requires sturdy support.

SOW INDOORS January-March, thinly 0.5cm/quarter-in deep in pots or trays of compost. Keep at 15-20°C/60-68°F and transplant into individual pots at the 2-4 leaf stage. Plant into large containers, grow bags or the greenhouse border from late April-May. Provide sturdy support, regularly remove side shoots and pinch out the growing tip after 4-5 trusses have formed. Water consistently and feed regularly with a liquid tomato fertiliser once the first fruits have set.
