Tatsoi Emperor's Savoy is a remarkably cold-tolerant Asian leafy vegetable forming attractive low rosettes of deep green leaves with crisp pale stems. Its mild flavour makes it a versatile home-grown ingredient for stir-fries, steaming, soups and salads, while young leaves can be picked for baby-leaf dishes. Particularly useful for cooler autumn cropping, when its tendency to bolt is reduced.

Sow outdoors April-September into finely prepared soil, 2.5cm deep in rows 30cm apart. Thin to around 10cm apart for mature plants or leave closer together and harvest as baby leaves. For protected cropping, sow indoors October-March in trays of compost with gentle warmth and transplant into a greenhouse or polytunnel border or large containers when plants are around 7.5cm tall. Outdoor crops can be ready from around 21-35 days, with protected winter crops taking longer.
