Bring rich, warm colour to beds, borders and patio containers with this compact black-eyed Susan. Large semi-double flowers combine deep mahogany centres with golden-yellow petal tips, creating a striking display from summer into autumn. The neat, bushy plants flower early, attract bees and butterflies and provide sturdy stems for cutting. Remove faded blooms regularly to encourage further flowers.

SOW INDOORS February-April, thinly 0.5cm/quarter-in deep in pots or trays of seed compost. Keep in gentle warmth and transplant at the 2-4 leaf stage. Harden off and plant out from late May, spacing plants 30cm/12in apart. SOW OUTDOORS April-May directly in the flowering position. Thin seedlings as necessary and remove faded flowers regularly to prolong the display.
