Bring rich, home-grown flavour to autumn cooking with this traditional American pie pumpkin. The vigorous plants produce approximately 3-4 rounded fruits, each weighing 2-3kg, with attractive dark orange skin and thick, sweet flesh. Delicious roasted or blended into warming soups and perfectly suited to pumpkin pies. The colourful fruits can also be carved into Halloween lanterns.

SOW INDOORS April-May, singly on their edge, 1.5cm/half-in deep in pots of compost. Keep at 15-20°C/60-68°F. Harden off from late May and plant out in June. SOW OUTDOORS May-June, sowing two seeds per position, 1.5cm/half-in deep. Thin to the strongest seedling and space plants 90cm/3ft apart. Keep well watered, particularly while fruits are swelling. Pinch out the growing tips once 4-5 fruits have formed.
