Bring warm, mellow shades to borders with these unusual yellow coneflowers. Strong, sturdy stems carry long-lasting blooms that are excellent for cutting and rich in nectar for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. An early sowing can flower in the first year, with the hardy plants forming increasingly impressive clumps in subsequent seasons.

SOW INDOORS February-July, 0.5cm/quarter-in deep in trays of seed compost. Keep at 15-20°C/60-68°F and transplant seedlings 5cm/2in apart when large enough to handle. Harden off after the risk of frost and plant out 30cm/12in apart. Keep moist until established and remove faded flowers to encourage further blooms. Late sowings may flower the following year. SOW OUTDOORS May-July in a prepared seed bed, transplanting to the final position when established.
