Want to learn more about our dahlia maroon fox flower tubers? We answer your questions here.
Dahlia Maroon Fox and Dahlia hybrid tubers are best planted in spring, from mid to late April onwards, once all risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Your Dahlia Maroon Fox tubers thrive in full sun and require well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Plant the tubers 10–15cm (4–6in) deep, with their shoots just below the surface, spacing them 45–60cm (18–24in) apart to allow for their multi-branching habit.
Keep the soil evenly moist while young Dahlia Maroon Fox plants establish, and water regularly during the growing season.
Dahlia Maroon Fox grows best in the ground. Roots spread freely for taller plants, resulting in more blooms. They can be planted in pots, which work for small spaces. We recommend you use 30-40cm sized containers with drainage. Water daily and feed regularly, but expect slightly fewer flowers to grow in a more constricted space.
Dahlia hybrids like Dahlia Maroon Fox are perennials, meaning they can come back year after year from the same tubers. But here in the UK, where winters bite, the tubers may rot in wet, cold soil, so most gardeners treat them as annuals unless you dig them up.
After the first frost turns the foliage black, cut stems to 10-15cm, then gently lift the tubers with a fork. Shake off soil, let them dry in a sunny spot for a few days, and store in a box of barely moist compost or sand in a frost-free shed or garage (around 5-7°C). Replant in April, and next summer’s show will be even better.
