Coreopsis Early Sunrise

Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’ is a short-lived perennial, meaning it can return each year but may weaken over time. In ideal conditions, it will flower for several seasons, but many gardeners treat it as an annual and replace the plants every few years. Deadheading encourages a longer flowering period, and cutting back Coreopsis plants in autumn can help improve their longevity. 

Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’ is hardy in most parts of the UK, tolerating temperatures down to around -5°C. However, in colder regions or during severe winters, frost may damage or kill plants, especially in poorly drained soil. Providing mulch in autumn helps protect roots from freezing temperatures. If conditions are particularly harsh, overwintering young plants indoors or growing them in a sheltered spot improves survival. 

Sow Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’ seeds indoors from February to April. Use well-drained compost and lightly cover the seeds with soil. Keep seedlings moist but not waterlogged, and transplant them into a sunny, well-drained site with 30cm (12in) spacing. Once established, Coreopsis plants require minimal care, growing well in poor to moderate soils. Cut back after blooming for a second flush of flowers, and avoid excessive feeding, as rich soil can reduce flowering at the expense of foliage. For continued growth in colder areas, mulch in autumn to protect roots from frost.
