Mardi Gras produces generous crops of elongated fruits that ripen to an unusual peach shade, making the compact plants an attractive feature in pots and containers. The medium-hot chillies are excellent for adding fresh heat to sauces, marinades, curries and other home-cooked dishes.

SOW INDOORS February-April, thinly in pots or trays of compost, 0.5cm/quarter-in deep. Keep at 20-25°C/68-75°F. After germination, grow on at 15-18°C/60-65°F. Transplant seedlings into individual 7.5cm/3in pots when approximately 5cm/2in tall, then move into patio pots, grow bags or the greenhouse border. For outdoor crops, harden off and plant outside in June in a sunny, sheltered position. Feed regularly once fruits begin to set. Suitable for freezing.
