Bring a rich, smoky depth to home-cooked dishes with this unusual Peruvian chilli. Machu Picchu produces generous crops of large, fleshy and elongated fruits that ripen from dark green to a distinctive chestnut-brown. The medium-hot chillies are delicious used fresh in sauces, marinades and stews or dried and ground into chilli powder. Vigorous, upright plants are early to crop and perform well in greenhouse borders or patio containers.

SOW INDOORS February-April, thinly in pots or trays of compost, 0.5cm/quarter-in deep. Keep at 20-25°C/68-75°F. After germination, grow on at 15-18°C/60-65°F. Transplant seedlings into individual 7.5cm/3in pots when approximately 5cm/2in tall, then move into patio containers, grow bags or the greenhouse border. For outdoor crops, harden off and plant outside in June in a sunny, sheltered position. Feed regularly once fruits begin to set. Harvest when the fruits have fully ripened to dark brown.
