Carrot St Valery is a classic heritage variety dating back to the 19th century and remains an excellent maincrop choice for both the kitchen and show bench. Also known as New Red Intermediate, it produces high yields of long, uniform roots with splendid colour and very good flavour. The substantial roots are delicious roasted, added to hearty winter dishes or simply enjoyed as a traditional home-grown carrot, while their uniform shape has long made this variety a favourite with exhibitors.

Sow outdoors March-June, thinly and directly into the final growing position around 1.5cm deep. For a succession of roots, make further sowings at approximately two-week intervals. Thin seedlings carefully to an eventual spacing of around 10cm, allowing approximately 30cm between rows. Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid overwatering, which can cause roots to split. Harvest August-January.
